About Course

This course is an immersive, hands-on introduction to the craft of analog audio engineering. Students will explore the unique sonic characteristics, workflow demands, and creative possibilities of working with hardware consoles, tape machines, outboard processors, and mechanical effects. Across the sessions, students will break down the technical foundations of analog sound, demonstrate iconic gear and processing chains, and practice real-world techniques for building depth, warmth, and cohesion in a mix.

Topics

  • Analog Character & EQ
Learn how transformers, tubes, and circuit topologies shape harmonic distortion, tone, and EQ behavior.
  • Mechanical Compression
Explore optical, vari-mu, FET, VCA, and diode bridge compressors to understand their tonal and dynamic impact.
  • The Analog Console
Operate the SSL console, use channel strip EQ/dynamics, integrate outboard processors, and manage patch bays.
  • Hybrid Workflow & Mastering
Combine analog and digital techniques for recall, efficiency, and professional-quality delivery.
  • Analog Effects
Apply plate, spring, chamber, and tape-based effects for spatial design and creative depth.
  • Signal Flow & Troubleshooting
Build and manage analog signal chains while troubleshooting by ear for professional reliability.

Goals

  • Identify and explain how analog circuitry produces coloration, harmonics, and distortion.
  • Operate analog EQs, compressors, and preamps with confidence.
  • Compare and contrast compressor topologies for tone, speed, and musicality.
  • Perform full mixes on an analog console using channel strip EQ and outboard gear.
  • Integrate plate, spring, and tape-based effects for spatial design.
  • Combine analog and digital workflows with proper recall and session documentation.
  • Deliver a final mixed and mastered track that demonstrates analog processing techniques.
